Royal Caribbean International cruise line is known for being the owner/operator of the two largest cruise ships to ever have been built. The Oasis of the Seas and the Allure of the Seas were launched in 2009 and 2010, respectively, and were the first to have a capacity for over 6000 passengers. Ships of that size are not only incredibly expensive to build and operate, they are complex as well. It is therefore understandable that Royal Caribbean has chosen to build their next two cruise ships on a slightly smaller scale. But just slightly.
Project Sunshine 1 and Project Sunshine 2 were commissioned in February of 2011 and are not due to arrive in the Caribbean until the spring of 2015. Not much is known about this new class of cruise ship, other than the maximum double occupancy capacity will sit around 4100. Using that number as a guide, we can surmise that the Sunshine ships will take the second place in line behind the Oasis class of ships, and therefore be the second largest of the Royal Caribbean line.
Norwegian Cruise Line is also planning to launch two new ships for their Caribbean itineraries. Project Breakaway 1 and 2 are set to make their first launches in 2013 and 2014, respectively. The estimated maximum for double occupancy capacity is just slightly less than Project Sunshine, sitting at 4000. The largest ship in Norwegian's repertoire is the Epic, which in pure square footage is about 9% larger than the either ship in the Breakaway project, but has the same number of double occupancy staterooms. That means less square footage per passenger on the Breakaway ships, but just as much fun!
Princess Cruises is not to be left out of the big cruise ship list. They have plans to launch their next two ships in 2013 and 2014 as well, both of the Princess class. Passenger capacity will be about 3600, but all of the outer staterooms are set to include balconies. Despite the difference in numbers, the new Princess ships will be the largest in the fleet and no doubt will be outfitted with all the latest technology and amenities.
The ship building business certainly seems to be one industry not experiencing the effects of any economic difficulty. Even during the primary lean years, ships were being commissioned by the big cruise lines. Surely that is a good sign of job creation, vacation, fun, sun and family time in the Caribbean!
