Although Cape Town is largely known as a summer time destination, mostly on account of the fantastic climate and beautiful beaches, one of my favourite times in the city has to be the colder winter months. There's nothing better than snuggling up in front of a fireplace with a fantastic bottle of South African red wine, listening to the patter of rain outside. This unsettled time of year also gives one the opportunity to catch up on some cultural events. Galleries, museums and theatres organize special exhibitions and shows to keep the locals and visitors entertained. So even though the beach is probably not your best option, there is still plenty to do and see in the city and its surrounds.
This year has been no exception. The Iziko South African National Gallery is currently host to an exhibition of the works of the famed artist and resident of Cape Town, Vladimir Trechikoff, which will run from 26 May to 25 September 2011. The exhibition is titled "The Peoples Painter" and contains a host of unpublished material as well as some reproductions of the artist's most popular works. The book of the same name will serve as accompanying text to the exhibition.
The Iziko Museum is also currently displaying very interesting exhibits. 2009 saw the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin, as well as the 150th anniversary of the publication of his book, On the Origin of Species. This exhibition provides an overview of Darwin's life, his contribution to biology, and his relationship with the Cape. Additionally, the small but rather beautiful "Beads: Ritual and Ornamentation" exhibition features prehistoric and ethnographic beads from southern Africa. One play worth mentioning is The History Boys by Alan Bennett at Theatre on the Bay (until 6th August), winner of a host of awards both in the U.K. and U.S.
The Streetsmart SA organization run an annual Streetsmart week, usually in July, where participating restaurants run special offers of which a portion of the proceeds go to helping the street children in the city. Keep an eye out for participating restaurant specials, not only will you be able to enjoy fabulous meals at discounted rates, but you'll also be giving back to the community.
Many inner-city hotels, guesthouses and other establishments run specials as well, often in the form of great package deals, a must to look out for at this time of year. The added benefit of travelling now is missing the summer crowd, thus giving you more time to explore the city at your leisure, at often largely discounted rates. Whatever time of year you prefer, whether it's the cozy rainy season or the sultry, warm summer months, Cape Town will always be the perfect host to an unforgettable holiday!
