How does one create a wonderful convention booth?

By James Fisher

Booths are exhibits intended for trade shows or conventions. Like a science fair in school, conventions have booths, but they have products and services rather than science projects. From small companies to major corporations, trade shows are a great way for any company to reach the public. Many companies of every size have found that trade shows are an excellent way to connect with people who need what they have to offer.

An exhibit needs to grab the attention of the conventioneers. There are many aspects of design and marketing that must be taken into account when putting together a booth to ensure maximum impact. Surprisingly, even an element of psychology is required. The structure and design of the booth must first be conceived and planned.

Having a space that you can get creative with, whether it's a rental or a booth you brought with you, is crucial. So now that the structure's finished, colors and display set-up need to be addressed. Have you thought about the carpet color? What's the best color on the walls to compliment the color of the carpet? Choosing the right colors is very important to attract conventioneers, because the wrong colors will keep them away.

Recalling what was said about psychology earlier, the color combinations will either result in acceptance or rejection. To the human eye, combinations like red and blue are unattractive or "busy." In small areas, you can get away with this, but if your room only has a red bulb in it, it can affect your mood. A good visual design for your booth will assure that you get the best amount of traffic from your display.

If you can identify something that is visually attractive, you know the elements of visual design. If you've never considered why something attracted you visually, then it's time to start. Visual design encompasses repetition, color combinations, and available space. Balancing these elements will ensure that your exhibit draws the eye and attention of the conventioneers. Careful calculation and study of the world around us and formulating a plan to reconstruct it is the basis of being artistic, but talent does play a role.
