Running along the Caribbean coast of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, the Riviera Maya is an extremely popular tourist district. Before, it ran from the city of Playa del Carmen south to the village of Tulum. Now, however, towns and cities to the north of the original district are beginning to promote themselves as Riviera destinations. Because this is such a popular place for holiday makers, all these places compete for custom.
It's not hard to see why this place is such a popular destination. It features brilliant strips of fine white sands that embrace the clearest turquoise waters, punctuated with mangrove swamps. And off the shore you can find a glorious coral reef, and ship wrecks that are absolutely teeming with marine life. Clearly each resort along this magnificent stretch of coast is going to claim they offer the best experience of it, but which place should you stay to get the most out of this beautiful place?
You can go from one extreme to the other here. Though Playa del Carmen used to be a laid back town, it is now full of resorts and hotels that are modern, busy and glitzy. If you would prefer a more traditional setting, however, then Puerto Morelos still has the feel of a sleepy fishing village.
If you are going to the Riviera to enjoy some scuba diving, then it is how you access the sea that will most concern you. There are conformable and modest fishing and scuba diving lodges you can stay in at Boca Paila and Xcalak peninsulas, which are supposed to be among the best places to get access to the reef. There are programs offered to tourists there to help out in the effort to say the sea turtles which are currently under threat by human development.
There is some of the ancient history for which Mexico is famous, to be seen along the Riviera. At Tulum, for example, you can see some ruins that are a great example of the fascinating Mayan architecture. Where you stay on the Riviera Maya, then, should depend on what you want to do when you go there.
