Night Vision Scopes What Are The Features Of Employing A Set?

By Harry Macdonald

The benefits provided by night vision equipment is no longer a make-believe imagining portrayed in movies or restricted to the military. The technology is available to anyone who believes it can be of benefit. Many optical devices have night vision technology including binoculars, goggles, opera glasses, and telescopes. Night vision scopes what are the benefits no longer needs to be a mystery.

Binoculars are effectively two matching telescopes set side-by-side to point in the same direction. Night vision (NV) technology digitizes an image into electronic form and illuminates it in the process. The benefits of this technology are virtually endless. For example, it is useful for nocturnal animal researchers, birdwatchers, night sky watchers and many outdoor hikers. For mariners, night vision binoculars allow them to avoid collisions while underway at night. On large vessels, they allow sailors on watch duty to better spot small recreational vessels that are on a crossing course.

Similar to microscopes and other specialized optical instruments, NV binoculars have several lenses. The objective lens is positioned closest to the object under scrutiny or, in other words, the lens furthest away from the eyes of the viewer. This lens collects light from the viewed object. The magnification of that image is controlled by moving it closer or further from the objective lens.

Like all binoculars, NV sets will carry a magnification rating such as 8x40. The rating is typically stamped on the casing. It indicates that the binocular is capable of magnifying any object to eight times its actual size and that the lens size is 30mm. When magnification is increased in binoculars, the brightness as well as the field of view decreases.

The lens coating on NV binoculars is an important detail. The lens surface incorporates multiple layers of intricate chemical coating. This coating affects the effectiveness and longevity of the lens.

Given that NV binoculars represent a significant investment, it is important to use special cleaning cloths. Modern microfiber lens cloths are made purpose-made from tiny polyester or polyamide fibers that are a thousand times or more thinner than human hair. They allow binocular lenses to be cleaned with minimal scratching.

Users considering purchasing NV equipment need to be aware that it may not be usable in all situations. It is possible for a setting to be too dark even for NV technology. In a natural outdoor context, these situations are infrequent.

For mariners, for example, binoculars need to be small and light enough to be comfortably slung around the neck, waterproof ad easily handled, even in wet conditions. They should be able to withstand complete immersion in water. Some form of rubberized exterior to protect the binoculars from damage if bumped or dropped is probably desirable.

To recap, night vision scopes what are the benefits is a question easily answered. Modern production techniques have made night vision equipment affordable for most people. It is now widely used by many outdoor sports enthusiasts.
